Governing Body

Welcome to the Governors' section.

Who are the Governors of Shoreside Primary School?

 Governors come via one of three routes:

1. Parents of children in the School

2. Staff at the School

3. The local Community

What do Governors actually do?

School Governors have legal duties, powers and responsibilities. We must act together as a team; we cannot act individually or pursue our own agenda. Every decision we make is about ensuring that the pupils of Shoreside Primary School get the very best education possible. The Governing body of the school provides its strategic direction, oversees its management and is ultimately responsible for all aspects of school life.

We have 14 governors drawn from across the parent body, local community and staff.  We meet six times a year as a full Governing body. All Governors are expected to join one of our five sub-committee responsible for specific aspects of school life. Our five sub-committees are:

  • Curriculum

  • Staffing

  • Finance

  • Pay Review

  • Premises and Health and Safety

Sub-committees meet at least 3 times a year and sometime more often if there is a particular issue that needs further time spent on it. The duties of Governors include:

  • Determining the school’s objectives;

  • Monitoring the performance of the school, e.g. in examinations and key stage tests;

  • Overseeing the school budget;

  • Devising and approving policies and procedures;

  • Helping to recruit staff.

Parents are welcome to read the minutes of our meetings, and may request to attend meetings as observers.

Governors’ commitment to Shoreside Primary School

As Governors we personally also agree to:

  • Attend meetings on time and brings relevant papers;

  • Declare business and other interests;

  • Serve on a subcommittee;

  • Read agenda, minutes and other papers, and come to meetings with relevant contributions to make;

  • Share the workload, be willing to undertake work for the Governing Body between meetings;

  • Listen to different views and opinions, and always accept collective responsibility for decisions made by the Governing Body;

  • Maintain confidentiality;

  • Be willing to act as a ‘link’ for an area of the school’s work;

  • Visit the school;

  • Undertakes training and development, in particular ‘induction’ courses for new governors and introductory courses for areas of responsibility;

  • Represents the school/governing body positively within the local community.

Becoming a Governor

Being a parent governor can be an enjoyable, worthwhile and challenging way to help the school. It is also a great opportunity to get to know the school community better and work with a great team of people. The role does require commitment, but at a manageable level, and is very rewarding. Governors commit to the role for four years and when a vacancy comes up for a parent governor all parents are notified through the school newsletter.

All parents are encouraged to consider becoming a governor and if more than one person puts their name forward then an election of all parents takes place. Full training is offered to help support governors in their roles. The role of governor is an exciting and challenging one that offers a unique opportunity to understand more about how the school works and to help shape its future direction.

If you are interested, or know of someone who might be, we are always happy to discuss people’s skills and availability, so please contact the school or enquire in the school office for details.
